Endemic to the island of Borneo, a biodiversity hotspot of global notoriety, this towering tree once flourished in the region’s tropical forests and was known for its valuable timber.
PLANT RELATIVES
Belonging to the subsect, genus Shorea, of the plant family Dipterocarpaceae, this tree’s relatives, including the Shorea robusta (Sal tree) and Shorea leprosula (Yellow meranti), are commonly found in tropical regions.
EXTINCTION
It was last recorded in 1998, but has since vanished due to over harvesting and unsustainable logging practices.
