A Smoky Floral Echoing South Africa’s Untamed Past

Surrender to the wild with Haunted Rose, a smoky, spiced floral inspired by Macrostylis villosa subspecies 1 + 2, an untamed bloom once native to South Africa and lost to invasive species after 1960. Found only in a narrow stretch of rocky fynbos, it thrived in harsh, wind-swept conditions, its survival as defiant as its disappearance was swift. This fragrance is a trace of something fierce and unforgettable, an echo of wild beauty that refused to be tamed.

Scientific Reconstruction:
Through biotechnology, scent molecules from the Macrostylis villosa were identified and reinterpreted into a bold, smoky floral. Perfumer Jérôme Epinette approached the scent as a form of time travel, reconstructing not just the flower, but the entire environment it once inhabited.

We combined the intelligence of DNA sequencing and the imagination of the world's best perfumers to give new life to the extinct Macrostylis villosa subspecies 1 + 2, a small aromatic shrub with needle-like leaves that once produced clusters of white flowers for long periods of the year throughout South Africa.

    hauntingly beautiful

    deep, woody, and somehow, still light and beautifully floral. i was expecting the rose to be sweet, and i’m happy that it’s not. overall a great earthy floral. it’s become a staple for me.

    A rose like no other

    I’ve been wearing fragrance since the mid-80s and was never a fan of the smack-you-in-the-face, cloying rose scents. Thankfully, perfume houses have been developing rose fragrances that are more complex and such a departure from those of the past, and I’ve really been loving some of them.

    When I purchased the discovery set, my initial reaction to Haunted Rose was just “Hmm. Interesting take on a rose fragrance.” But after an hour or so, the scent transformed on me into an intriguing, warm, smokey floral. As the day wore on, it smelled more and more complex.

    Of all the fragrances in the set, Haunted Rose is the one that kept calling me back, and based on my initial impressions, that was a real surprise.

    I later took advantage of the holiday gift bundle sale and purchased the Haunted Rose body set. The shower gel and lotion smell exactly like the perfume after it’s dry down—just gorgeous. And the candle’s throw is very impressive! The perfume alone has great longevity, but when layered with the lotion, I can still smell it on my skin the next morning. I have several go-to fragrances that I adore, but I find myself actually craving Haunted Rose. It’s like nothing I’ve ever worn before.
