Winter has long been mistaken for an ending, a season when the world goes still beneath a blanket of snow. But beneath that frozen surface, nature is anything but dormant. Fresh snow insulates the earth below, protecting a hidden world where roots endure, microbial life remains active and life continues its unseen work. What looks like an ending is, in fact, full of beginnings.

HOW WE DID THIS

During the unforgettable winter storm in Boston on February 23, 2026, the Future Society team collected fresh snow to explore this hidden world more closely. What we found was a living ecosystem carrying on through the cold, revealing a side of winter we rarely get to experience.

Bringing Warmth to Winter

Perfumer Michael Nordstrand translated our discovery into scent. Sparkling lychee and crystallized rose bring brightness against the snow, cool mint evokes crisp winter air and warm sake, moss and soft woods reveal the unexpected warmth below.
